5 Important Fire Safety Tips for Deep-Frying Your Thanksgiving Turkey

5 Important Turkey Deep-Frying Fire Safety Tips for ThanksgivingAccording to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), “there are more than three times as many home cooking fires on Thanksgiving as a typical day of the year.” Deep-frying has become a popular way of cooking a turkey. It can be a dangerous experiment that should be approached with great caution.

If you’re set on cooking your Thanksgiving turkey this way, keep the following fire safety tips in mind:

Place Portable Fire Extinguishers in Strategic Locations

Keep a standard ABC rated fire extinguisher on hand to ensure that you have a means of dousing a possible flame if your deep-frying adventure gets out of hand. Do not, under any circumstances, try to extinguish a grease fire with water.

Position Your Propane Tank Appropriately

Your turkey fryer’s propane tank should be placed a minimum distance of 2 feet away from the burner. In case of a grease fire, this safe distance will help avoid a propane tank explosion.

Keep the Fryer Away from Your Property

Keep the fryer off the deck, out of a garage, and away from your property to avoid unwanted splatters and property damage. Position the fryer on a flat surface, ideally concrete or brick, and never leave it unattended.

Wear Protective Gear During the Frying Process

Wear gloves and protective eyewear when placing the turkey in the fryer, during the cooking process, and when removing the bird from the fryer.

Turn Off the Burner During Loading and Unloading

Before placing the bird into the fryer, and before removing it, make sure that you turn off the burner. Oil spills are most likely to occur when loading and unloading the bird from the fryer. For the safest approach, remove the fryer pot from atop the burner before placing or removing the bird.
